This week we are discussing globalization and global trade. For this discussion I would like for you to discuss a typical day in your life and observe all the products you use and discover where the item comes from and what how it might affect your life if you were not able to have it available to you. Make a list of all the global products you use in a typical day and look for where this item is made. For example: In the morning I enjoy a cup of Indonesian Sumatra coffee that I purchased at World Market and brewed in my Capresso coffee maker which is made in Taiwan. I then had a banana from Ecuador with my Frosted Flakes cereal. It is interesting to note that corn was domesticated from a wild grass called teosinte that grew in central Mexico. I dressed in Levi’s blue jeans made in Bangladesh, and wore a polo shirt made in China, but also made with 100% silk of which also comes from domesticated silk worms in China. I am wearing my Brooks tennis shoes made in Vietnam. I drive a Hyundai Palisade that is manufactured in South Korea, and is a brand of Hyundai/Kia which is a Korean auto company. It is interesting to note the Kia Telluride which is the “sister” SUV of this vehicle is made in Kia’s manufacturing plant in Georgia. I am typing this on a Lenovo Computer made in China, not California, but Lenovo purchased the technology from IBM when they sold off their personal computer business. My printer is an HP LaserJet Pro M201dw made in China. I am accessing the internet with a Netgear wireless router that says it was engineered in the US, but made in China. I come home from school and play my Kawai grand piano made in Japan and then watch hockey on my LG (South Korean company) flat-screen tv made in Mexico, not South Korea! I have an Apple iPhone 11 that was made in China. We are doing our part to conserve energy and have LED light bulbs in all my light fixtures, that are made in China. I love dark chocolate which is made by Hershey, but the cocoa beans used to make the chocolate come from the Ivory Coast of Africa. I had a Bernese Mountain Dog, which is a breed of dog that comes from Switzerland. My favorite food is Chinese, I love cashews which come from Brazil. Tonight we are eating Polska Kielbasa which is a type of sausage that originated from Poland. My wife then cooks up Maruchan Yakisoba which is a Japanese stir-fry noodle and combines the kielbasa and noodles into a stir fry meal. These are just a few of things I did today, all of which would not be possible if not for world trade. Please discuss a day in your life and think of the products you use that are available to you through trade.
