F‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍or the first assessment piece students will need to create a comparative problem-response brief which will look at a current crime issue of your choosing across three different countries. You can choose any crime problem to focus on. If you are unsure about whether the crime problem you have chosen is appropriate, please talk to the course coordinator or your tutor. Your chosen issue and two of your chosen countries will later be used for Assessment 2. Students will need to complete a brief including a concise profile of a crime problem and a response to the problem in each of the three different jurisdictions. This profile should: outline the crime problem and why it is criminologically interesting, examine the extent of the problem, and what is currently being done to solve/combat the problem (the response). The response could be a legislative response (laws created to deal with the problem), a law enforcement response (how police are attempting to control the problem), or a court-based response (how judg‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍es are punishing those who contribute to the problem). It is recommended that you focus on one type of response across all jurisdictions (. three court-based responses) to write a concise and well-articulated brief. This brief requires you to clearly present the crime problem and responses so that they can be understood by anyone who is not a specialist. This may require you to draw on census data (where available and applicable) and other official statistics including police, correctional, government or NGO data, to help describe the crime problem, responses, and contexts. The Comparative Problem-Response Brief must be written using the following headings and table format. Introduction It is recommended you have a brief Introduction outlining why your chosen crime problem is criminologically interesting. Summary Table Summarising each jurisdiction’s crime problem and response. Analysis of Response for Country 1 Analysis of Response for Country 2 Analysis of Response for Country 3 Reference L‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ist
