As a position of power and influence individuals that are part of the criminal justice field especially those dictating the rules, policies, and programs have even more of a responsibility to account for biases and negative impact that could be a product of their policy. From past experiences we have seen that at times policies favoring one group of the population while negatively impacting others have come to pass. We must be diligent not to repeat the past and make changes that will positively and ethically impact current and future generations. (91)

Travel and ‘overtime’ is always a source of ethical dilemmas. For example, I have seen issues with travel and time worked. Where because we are on LEAP supervisors want us to travel and do 12hr shifts within travel day to save money, but that exhausts and overworks officers. When officers are tired, overworked, and overwhelmed they are more likely to become jaded or make mistakes. Mistakes in law enforcement could be the difference between life and death.

Ethical responsibilities refer to the code of conduct that governs all individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Ethical responsibilities in criminal justice policy-making are an essential part of the process in order to make firm, fair, and consistent decisions. It is necessary to take a responsible approach to what one is doing by taking into account all of the relevant information, considering different points of view, and making sure that one’s actions are aligned with their values. This helps ensure that everyone in the criminal justice system behaves in a professional manner.
An example of an ethics concern is the conduct of correctional officers. Most state prisons, private, prisons, federal prisons, and county jails are dealing with low employee rates, which can make decision-making harder and stress at an all-time high. Not making excuses for these individuals, because regardless of change, we still have to remain professional. The conduct that I witnessed was excessive use of force from 8 officers against 1 inmate. I responded that night to an ICS that was called on offenders being in possession and under the influence of a substance called K2, which is synthetic marijuana. Three offenders were locked up that night and all but three complied with all instructions. The one that did not comply, tried to head-butt one of the officers escorting him to lock up. That inmate was assisted to the ground while in hand restraints and took a beating by 8 officers. When all was done the inmate lost his right eye that night, 1 officer got fired, and 7 others got disciplinaries and put on probation. A lawsuit was filed by the offender’s family and they won.
