The explanation does not need to be more than a sentence or two for each variable unless you believe it is necessary. Here are 3 great examples of cultural variables offered by three different students in previous semesters. You need 5, but these will give you an idea of what I´m looking for: 1. Embarrassment leading to “losing face” (in Asian culture especially). An ELL student feels he doesn’t have enough lexical and grammatical skills to hold a successful conversation with other American students. S/he doesn´t want to make mistakes in front of others. As a result, s/he withdraws from social groups and feels isolated from conversational practice. 2. Roles and interpersonal relationships- My ELL is Hispanic and speaks Spanish. From previous experience, I know it isn’t always valued for female family members to finish school. I would be interested with her family if education and graduation is valued, or at least as valued as it would be for males. If finishing school was not valued, then I would think learning English also wouldn’t be valued. 3. Nonverbal behavior- If they express a nonverbal behavior that could get them in trouble because it isn’t found appropriate in the classroom in the . Example: in their culture closing their eyes could be expressed to better understand what is being said to them, but in the . classroom the teacher might think they are being rude and not listening to them, resulting in them getting in trouble which could affect their learning.
