This literature review is the Signature Assignment for 1010. In this assignment, you will identify a specific area of your course’s big idea that your review will focus upon. We’ve covered a lot of topics having to do with our big question “In a consumer-driven world, what is the value of research, writing, and discussion for your life?” Articulate your literature review in terms of a field or subfield of study that relates to your big idea. A Literature Review is not a traditional “essay.” You will not make an argument; rather, you will illustrate the ongoing conversation happening about the chosen topic. Literature Reviews include no first-person perspective; they show some of the directions discussion of your topic has taken in academic, media, and other cultural conversations. Directions Identify the specific areas of your course’s big idea that your review will focus upon. Articulate your literature review in terms of a field or subfield of study that relates to your big idea. You should use a minimum of 6 sources (at least 2 academic sources and 2 mainstream national media source, and no more than 2 pop-culture sources and 1 personal source). Construct a thesis statement for your literature review. Since your review is meant to provide information on the topic for your reader, it should be informative and persuasive. That said, you should justify the groupings you choose – not just why you’ve grouped them that way but what it provides a particular insight (or need for more or different research) into the field you’ve chosen. Create an outline for your review based upon your thesis statement. A basic outline might look like this: Title: Choose a clever title to catch attention. Introduction: Introduce the topic of the review, its significance, and the thesis statement. Body: Group your sources into different categories and devote 2-3 pages to each category. For a review of this length, 2-4 categories should be sufficient. Conclusion: Summarize the review’s main points, restate the thesis, and provide suggestions for further research. Using your outline, write a draft of your literature review. Submit a draft of your literature review to be reviewed by a peer. Take a draft of your review to the Writing Center for additional feedback (highly recommended). Revise your literature review and submit in Canvas. Format Times New Roman 12-point font, one-inch margins, double-spaced throughout MLA-style heading: Name, instructor’s name, course, date Last name, page numbers in the upper-right corner of the header Title centered above the first paragraph Works Cited page with citations in proper MLA format
