“The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the world’s first child protective entity, was started in 1875 by the founders of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after they learned that pets had greater legal protections than children. During the Gilded Age and into the early 20th century many young children and teenagers, often children of immigrants, worked in factories. The first federal grants for child welfare services weren’t authorized until the Social Security Act of 1935 and it wasn’t until 1962 that congress passed an amendment to the Social Security Act of 1935 that made state-wide child welfare agencies mandatory. By 1967 all states had mandatory reporting laws.”
So, what do you think? Pets were given legal protection before children were. What factors would have led people to protect pets before children? Children were working in factories. Did you know that? Why do you think that was the situation? Why were children working instead of going to school? Did you assume that protections were always in place to protect children? Why do you think they weren’t? Are children protected enough today? If you don’t think they are, why do you think they aren’t?
I want a thoughtful, well-written essay examining those questions. You can use material from the textbook or other sources to craft your reply. I would expect that it would take at least two pages to cover this topic.
