There are many genres of music, which arguably serve different purposes, and consuming content from each one of these categories may sh‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ow different results. Music when consumed consciously and in a memorable setting is stored in certain neural pathways that connect it with a positive or negative emotion. In this research paper I would like to explore the functionality of a specific topic within music, namely substance use, within the genre of modern hip-hop and the effects it has on people in the age group of 16 to 30 year olds. Taking into account the size of the audience of this genre of music, it is potentially one of the most influential forms of expression seen today. My prediction for possible results is that young adults who get involved with the modern hip-hop culture where substance use is promoted will be found to have a higher percentage of people who have either tried using, or currently are using substances than of those who are involved in other genres of music such as would like to use qualitative methods to research “how” and “why” substance use is promoted in modern hip-hop and what effect it has on young adults. My primary research strategy will be a narrative approach, using inductive reasoning. One of the reasons I chose this topic of research is that it allows me to take an interpretivist approach, seeing as I listen to modern hip-hop my self and I am relatively involved in the culture that it promotes. The specific question I would like to ask in my paper is “Does the promotion of substance use in modern hip-hop music increase the amount of young adults who consume ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍illegal substances?”.
